Description
Rembrandt volgde de leermethode van die dagen: onder toezicht van de meester doorliep een leerling zijn opleiding. Die nauwe, jarenlang durende samenwerking is voor de kunstproductie van grote betekenis geweest. Van 1650 tot 1669 hebben tenminste vijftien schilders zijn onderwijs genoten, onder wie Nicolaes Maes, Willem Drost, Abraham van Dijck en Arent de Gelder. Diverse van hen waren daartoe aangemoedigd door Rembrandts voormalige leerling Samuel van Hoogstraten. Zij hoopten allen Rembrandts wijze van schilderen te leren en hoe uiteenlopende onderwerpen konden worden uitgebeeld.
