La teoria pittorica di Leon Battista Alberti è il risultato dell'interazione di tre fattori: la cultura umanista, la teoria e la pratica del disegno e la teoria ottica. Per le sue conoscenze scientifiche Alberti attinse sia alla tradizione scolastica delle università occidentali, sia alle nuove traduzioni dei trattati ottici che dalla cultura araba furono trasmessi agli europei come l'Ottica di Tolomeo e, soprattutto, il De aspectibus di Alhacen. Le tre componenti della teoria pittorica albertiana interagiscono sviluppando una visione complessiva del "weltbild" dell'età moderna, che impegnerà gli studi per lungo tempo. La nuova e originale lettura del De pictura proposta da Filosofi, oratori e pittori apre infatti nuovi spazi alla ricerca degli studi consacrati a Leon Battista Alberti, alla storia e la teoria dell'arte, alla storia della cultura e alla storia della appropriazione dei saperi scientifici da parte degli artisti.
