The general approach to the study of language known today as cognitive linguistics has evolved as an essential part of a broader quest for a more satisfying account of the nature of human cognition in general and of linguistic meaning in particular; a quest in which a sizable group of cognitive scientists (i.e. linguists, psychologists, anthropologists, philosophers, computer scientists, even literary critics) has been engaged since the mid-seventies, initially in the United States and shortly afterwards in Europe and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the world.
