Der Amerikaner Thomas Gentille zählt zu den führenden Schmuckkünstlern weltweit und gilt als Mitbegründer des Autorenschmucks in den USA. Als erster setzt er Ende der 1950er-Jahre neuartige Kunststoffe, Aluminium, Hölzer, Pappmaché, Sägemehl, Seide, Glaskugeln und Luft ein ? statt Gold, Silber und Edelsteinen. Gentille will damit die Wertigkeit von Edelmetallen in der Schmuckgestaltung und ihre Beurteilung infrage stellen. Ebenso lehnt er die Datierung seiner Arbeiten ab. Seine Stücke sind Unikate, die oft einzigartig in ihrer Nähe zu Skulptur und Architektur sind. Bemerkenswert ist die von Gentille entwickelte 'Eggshell'-Technik, mit der er unerwartete Craquelé-Effekte erzielt. Mit rund 180 Schmuckobjekten und Zeichnungen wird erstmals ein umfassender Überblick über sein Lebenswerk vorgelegt.
