En publiant, en 1969, sa thèse intitulée Syntaxe de la proposition nucléaire en français parlé, Roulet se signalait à lʹattention de ses lecteurs par l'originalité avec laquelle il traitait son sujet. Analysant son corpus successivement selon les méthodes de la tagmémique, puis de la grammaire générative et transformationnelle, il faisait œuvre de pionnier, présentant à un public francophone des théories accessibles presque exclusivement aux lecteurs de la langue anglaise. Il est vrai qu'en ce qui concerne la GGT, E.R. avait été devancé de justesse par N. Ruwet qui venait de publier son Introduction? La grammaire générative (1967). Mais ce dernier traitait des principes généraux, alors que Roulet les appliquait à Une langue précise. Toutefois, il nous manquait un exposé critique des principes de la théorie de Pike.
