Thomas Grochowiak steht für den Aufbruch der Kunst nach 1945 in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. In Recklinghausen geboren und aufgewachsen, schloß er sich 1948 den Kumpels des Ruhrgebiets an, die eine neue Kulturlandschaft prägten „Kunst für Kohle“. Mit ihrer Kohlenspende an die Hamburger Bühnen kamen im Gegenzug Künstler aus Hamburg nach Recklinghausen: Es entstanden Theater- und Opernaufführungen, bald auch Kunstausstellungen und Diskussionsforen, die bis heute als die „Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen“ fortleben. Wie kaum ein anderer prägte Thomas Grochowiak die westdeutsche Kunst als Ausstellungsgestalter, Kunsthallenleiter, Museumsgründer, Pädagoge, Buchautor, Künstlerbundpräsident, Kunstdiplomat und als ein ebenso unkonventioneller wie unermüdlicher Vermittler zwischen Politik und Kultur die Kunstentwicklung in Deutschland.
