Description

This is a vivid account of the island of Jamaica written after Mona Macmillan spent a year there, arriving in October 1954. She writes of the history of the island but is particularly concerned with the present and the future of Jamaica as she saw it in the 1950s. She writes well and honestly, showing great understanding and sympathy for the people of the island. The title refers to an area in the centre of Jamaica known as 'the land of look behind'. Mona Macmillan thought that 'the blank on the map stood for that blank which the past is to the Jamaican, a blank into which he does not care to look......'
