Im zweiten Band ihres Lehrbuches Einführung in die Emotionspsychologie widmen die Autoren Wulf-Uwe Meyer, Achim Schützwohl und Rainer Reisenzein der Darwin'schen Emotionstheorie ein sehr umfangreiches Kapitel. Indem sie die historische Dimension der Emotionsforschung offen legen, gelingt ihnen zweierlei: Zum einen wird deutlich, wie "fortschrittlich" und zutreffend die frühen Emotionstheorien bereits waren; zum anderen wird der kardinale Unterschied zwischen der Emotionsforschung im 19. Jahrhundert und heute deutlich. Während Emotionen früher als Instinkthandlungen angesehen wurden, unterscheidet man heute zwischen primären Emotionen und sekundären Emotionen, die sich durch ein unterschiedliches Maß an Komplexität unterscheiden: Stolz etwa ist eine sekundäre Emotion, die sich aus einer Mischung der Primär-Emotionen Freude und Ärger ergibt. Stolz ist keine Instinkthandlung, sondern eine stark durch gedankliche Überlegungen beeinflusste Operation.
