Axel Sjöberg (1866-1950) var en känd målare på sin tid, utbildad vid Konstakademien. Han arbetade med kraftfulla penseldrag i måleriet och svärta i teckningarna. Ofta landskap med människor och djur i kamp med hårda livsvillkor. Han hämtar mycket inspiration och motiv från ytterskärgården, något som också syns i hans omslag till flera Strindbergsböcker. Axel Sjöberg och hans konst sätts här in i en expressionistisk tradition men också i relation till andra framträdande djur- och naturskildrare.
