Description
In the 1890s, Visby's medieval environments attracted some of Sweden's most famous painters to create works here that have become classics. During the first decades of the 20th century, however, ruin romance was no longer fashionable, so Gotland was chosen by the artists. It was only after the Second World War that Gotland's own artistic life began to take shape. Now the island's peculiar nature inspired, and more and more artists settled in the Gotland countryside. They have saved abandoned buildings from decay and contributed to a rich artistic life. Gotland's art association and the Association of Gotland artists were formed, new exhibition spaces and an art museum were opened, politicians got involved through Visby's art committee and the three daily newspapers devoted a lot of space to the exhibitions. Artists' Gotland - The 20th century depicts this development. As the book's title indicates, the artists are the focus here. Some of Gotland's pioneers are also presented in more detail. Annika Svahnström has a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Uppsala University in, among other things, art history, which she has also studied as a scholar in Italy and France. She has worked as a journalist and diplomat På 1890-talet lockade Visbys medeltida miljöer några av Sveriges mest kända målare att här skapa verk som blivit klassiska.
