Description

Samuel Joseph May writes to William Lloyd Garrison to recount the lecture given in Syracuse the previous week by Frederick Douglass. May states that the event was well-attended, and that as there was "proof enough that there was a conspiracy to break up the meeting", it was arranged to have soldiers guard the hall to prevent incident and harm to Douglass. May compliments Mayor Charles Andrews for his actions in ensuring that the meeting was not broken up by anti-abolitionist mobs (as had occurred the prveious January to the "disgrace" of Syracuse). May requests that Garrison and Wendell Phillips lecture in Syracuse the coming winter.
