Cet ouvrage est la thèse de médecine sur l'hystérie soutenue en 1893 par Pierre Janet. Pour lui, l'hystérie est une maladie mentale caractérisée par des symptômes moraux ; le principal est un affaiblissement de la faculté de synthèse psychologique avec rétrécissement du champ de la conscience. L'hystérie est ainsi une forme de désagrégation mentale caractérisée par la tendance au dédoublement permanent de la personnalité, une idée que Freud et Breuer défendait la même année (1893).
