Este libro busca mostrar que la clase obrera sudamericana no puede personificar las potencias históricas de su relación social de forma inmediata, sino que solo puede ser lo que históricamente está llamada a ser “de acuerdo a su ser” (Marx y Engels, 1938: 57) por medio de un rodeo. Como veremos a lo largo de los diferentes capítulos, la renta de la tierra, base de la valorización del capital sudamericano, da lugar a que este último circule sin la necesidad de ser portador de la productividad media del trabajo social. Se trata por ello de capitales que se reproducen, en lo inmediato, aparentemente a contrapelo de su sentido histórico. De ahí que el punto de partida del reconocimiento de la potencia histórica de la clase obrera en América del Sur pasa por poner en evidencia que esta se afirma negada bajo la forma de una renta de la tierra y no portada de manera inmediata.
