Description
Die verhaal begin met Kasper van Blerk, 'n boer op Rietvlei, wat terugdink aan sy moeilike lewe, veral die verlies van sy twee seuns in 'n konsentrasiekamp en die onenigheid met sy vrou, Sannie. Hul dogter, Wenda, ontmoet en raak verlief op Braam du Plessis, maar hy sterf in 'n fietsongeluk kort nadat hulle hul verlowing aankondig. Wenda trou later met Flip Swart, die bestuurder van die Boerewinkel in Kromburg. Sy sukkel om aan te pas by die bekrompe dorpslewe, wat gekenmerk word deur skindery en sosiale snobisme, veral van dr. Marais en sy vrou. Wenda voel vasgevang en verlang na 'n meer vervullende bestaan. Flip is onbewus van haar innerlike stryd en sy ma, Hannie, keur Wenda af. Die roman eindig met Wenda se onvergenoegdheid en Flip se eie frustrasies in sy werk.
