First Sentence
WHEN a student has acquired a moderate knowledge of the operations and principles of algebra, with as many theorems of geometry as are contained in the first four books of Euclid's Elements, it becomes most desirable that he should gain some more exact knowledge of the connexion between the ideas which are the foundation of one and the other science, than would present itself either to an inattentive reader, or to one whose whole attention is engrossed by the difficulty of comprehending terms which cannot yet have become familiar to him.
