Georg Baselitz ist nicht nur einer der profiliertesten und streitbarsten Künstler weltweit, er ist seit langem auch ein kenntnisreicher Sammler manieristischer Druckgrafik, auf die er 1965 in Florenz als Stipendiat der Villa Romana aufmerksam wurde. Für das eigene Werk sollte diese Begegnung prägend werden. Das gilt sowohl für seine Bildfindungen der folgenden Jahrzehnte als auch für sein von künstlerischem Eigensinn geprägtes Selbstverständnis. Auch das konsequente Beharren auf traditionellen druckgrafischen Techniken, die in den 1960er Jahren längst als überholt galten, wird durch diese kreative Bezugnahme plausibel.
