Christopher Sclater Millard, unter dem Pseudonym Stuart Mason der erste Biograph Wildes, sah in ihm «den brillantesten Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts»; George Saintsbury, der bekannte englische Literaturhistoriker, erwähnt ihn in keiner seiner beiden Literaturgeschichten des 19. Jahrhunderts, die 1907 und 1908 erschienen.
