Willem Bastiaan Tholen (1860-1931) is tegenwoordig vooral bekend in een kleine kring van liefhebbers. Daarbuiten denkt men met name aan de schilder van landschappen en water. Dat hij ook sfeervolle stadsgezichten, intieme interieurs, nocturnes en ontroerende (zelf)portretten maakte, is tot nu toe onderbelicht gebleven. En dat terwijl de grote verscheidenheid van zijn schilderijen, tekeningen en prenten de critici destijds al opviel: ?Tholen durft álles aan?. Het boek is thematisch en deels chronologisch van opzet en plaatst Tholen in zijn (artistieke) omgeving.
