Mais ce qui devait affranchir a instauré une nouvelle servitude. Le XXème sicèle, nourri de tragiques expériences, s'est imprégné d'un pessimisme croissant à l'égard des sciences et techniques, dont on craint désormais qu'elles dévastent le monde. C'est l'évolution de cette conception des sciences et techniques dans la cité idéale que l'on a tenté de raconter ici.
