Uno scrittore di romanzi (Charles Block) si interessa a un uomo un po’ strano (Paul Barnes), che passa le sue giornate per strada ad aspettare e a osservare la gente e le macchine. Presto lo scrittore vorrà sapere tutto di quest’uomo e cercherà di farlo con qualunque mezzo. Nel corso dell’inchiesta scopre fatti sconvolgenti: il suo soggetto incarna infatti la sofferenza umana in tutto ciò che essa può avere di più patetico e, arrestato per esibizionismo, finisce rinchiuso in una struttura psichiatrica da cui uscirà castrato. Tra i numerosi problemi sollevati da questo romanzo è il posto della marginalità nel mondo moderno, quello della libertà individuale di fronte alle costrizioni della società, quello delle sessualità non conformi. Il romanzo è stato riadattato per la televisione e per il cinema ed è stato tradotto in inglese, serbo e spagnolo. Rientra nella selezione dei migliori 100 romanzi del Québec. In Canada, ha vinto il Prix Robert-Cliché nel 1979.
