Aus verschiedenen Gründen verließen über zwei Millionen Iren im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert ihre kleine Insel im Atlantik. Auch die Künstler suchten in England und auf dem europäischen Festland Ausbildungs- und Anstellungsmöglichkeiten. Neben Rom, München und Antwerpen war vor vor allem Paris begehrtes Ziel. Viele kehrten später auf die heimtliche Insel zurück und setzten die fremden Einflüsse in ihrer Malerei.
