"De la tradición bíblica, además de la grecolatina y la afrocubana, provienen muchos de los motivos del teatro cubano. Que un drama se nutra de referentes bíblicos no implica religiosidad ni reverencia sino, en sentido amplio, parodia: reescritura con variación. De las doce piezas que figuran aquí, cuatro fueron escritas antes de 1959: dos recrean la natividad y las otras dos la pasión de Jesús, un Cristo pirandelliano y otro del absurdo. Las ocho restantes hablan del bebé de Rosemary, de la muerte de Dios en Vietnam, de Judas, de un país ensangrentado, del Job de las pústulas, de un Daniel víctima de la guerra de Angola, de extrañas epifanías y siempre, en fin, del evangelio de la Revolución."
