In die hoogtijdagen nam het oude Alexandrië een bijzondere plaats in, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege zijn beroemde Bibliotheek. Nu draagt het Westen de toorts van tolerantie, eruditie en beschaving - maar niet voor lang meer: Europa bevindt zich in een crisis. In de islamitische wereld grijpt ondertussen een gevaarlijk religieus fanatisme om zich heen. Ismail Serageldin roept de islam en het Westen op de geest van het oude Alexandrië te doen herleven en te strijden voor de universele waarden van de Verlichting. Nexus-lezing 2011.
