Description

"'Romancing the Margins?' engages with current debates in lesbian and gender studies about the construction of lesbian identities at the intersection of race, class, and sexuality." "Questions are asked about the construction of lesbian characters in 1990s lesbian texts, and the ways in which these reflect current preoccupations with the notion of the instability of identity."--BOOK JACKET.

First Sentence

When the call for papers for this volume went out in a great variety of journals, newsletters, and bulletins, most of them specifically mentioning 'lesbian' or 'lesbian and gay' in their title, one of the first papers, symptomatic in some respects of the rest, to appear on my desk was one by a man producing a densely argued piece about Gertrude Stein-with not a mention of her lesbianism.
