De portretten zijn geplaatst in de context van de eeuwenlange interesse en fascinatie voor de flora van Indonesië.0De Indonesische flora telt meer dan 45.000 verschillende plantensoorten, wat gelijk staat aan tien procent van alle bekende soorten op aarde. Al vanaf de allereerste contacten, eind zestiende eeuw, ontstond er in Nederland een fascinatie voor deze rijke plantenwereld. Die uit zich in de oprichting van botanische tuinen (Hortus Botanicus) in zowel Indië als Nederland en in schitterend geïllustreerde wetenschappelijke beschrijvingen van de Indonesische flora. Ook de schilderijen van rijke zeventiende-eeuwers die zich laten afbeelden met hun privéverzameling exotische bloemen en planten zijn voorbeelden van erfgoed dat ons vandaag de dag nog inzicht geeft in die fascinatie.
