Legenden gelten gemeinhin als Schemaliteratur, die mit einem begrenzten Arsenal an Erzählbausteinen das Leben heiliger Personen darstellt. Dabei verfügt die mittelalterliche Hagiographie über eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten des Erzählens von Heiligkeit. Dieses Buch nimmt daher die Pluralität und Variabilität der im Mittelalter existierenden Optionen in den Blick, indem es Spezifika des legendarischen Erzählens als ein Wechselverhältnis von variablen Heiligkeitsmodellen und flexiblen religiösen Funktionalisierungen beschreibt. Den Ausgangspunkt bilden die deutschsprachigen Heiligenerzählungen des Mittelalters, doch eröffnen sich im Horizont der lateinischen Vorlagen Perspektiven auf langwellige Prozesse der Genese und Transformation von Heiligkeitsmodellen seit der Spätantike. Der Band legt damit ein methodisches Angebot für künftige Arbeiten zum legendarischen Erzählen vor, um dessen charakteristische Vielfalt weiter zu erschliessen.
