First Sentence
In 1689, with the publication of the first volume of her collected works, Castalian Inundation, the Mexican nun of the Order of St. Jerome, Sor (Sister) Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-95) was called "tenth muse," indicating that she, a mere mortal, was like Sappho in antiquity, worthy of the company of the nine goddess of the arts, the muses.1
