Description
Moses Wessely (1737–1792), mehr Freund und Gesprächspartner der Aufklärer als Protagonist der Aufklärung, steht für jene Repräsentanten der jüdischen Aufklärung, die das Judentum nicht verlassen, sich von ihrem jüdischen Milieu aber immer mehr entfernen und damit eine von der Haskala eingeforderte sichtbare kulturelle Sonderexistenz weitgehend aufgeben. Er machte sich einen Namen als Nationalökonom, Literaturkritiker und Freund von Mendelssohn und Lessing. Sein Beitrag zur Aufklärung in Altona und Hamburg beginnt in 1770er Jahren und endet in den 1780er Jahren. In dieser Zeit setzte er sich ein für die bürgerliche Gleichstellung der Juden und für das Recht auf Schule und Bildung.
