Summary: Hulp voor Onbehuisden (HVO) werd in 1904 opgericht als een particuliere instelling die zich bekommerde om daklozen. De Queridostichting opende rond 1970 een psychiatrisch "verpleeghuis" voor chronische patiënten, annex "sluisinternaat" voor de begeleiding van (ex-)patiënten bij hun terugkeer in de maatschappij. Dit boek beschrijft het samengaan van beide instellingen tegen de achtergrond van het veranderende sociaal-economische en culturele klimaat in de laatste decennia van het 20ste-eeuwse Amsterdam.
