Description

The Nottoway Artillery was organized in Nottoway County in 1861 and was under the command of Captain William Calvin Jeffress for the whole war. Captain John W. Barr's Company was organized in 1863 and was at that time Captain John T. Levi's Company of Light Artillery, Thomas' Legion, North Carolina Troops. It was formed from disbanded troops of the Virginia State Line and was also known as Barr's Battery or Barr's Artillery or Levi's Battery. The Saltville Artillery was organized as Captain William King's Company of the Virginia Local Defense Troops. Only one muster roll exists for this troop in 1864. By 1865, it was stationed near Richmond.
