Description
Vanaf 1938 reisde fotograaf en cineast Alphons Hustinx door Nederland om in theaters en filmzalen zijn documentairefilms over Zuid-Afrika (1931), Perzië en Nederlands-Indië te vertonen. Hij doorkruiste het land tot hij op 10 mei 1940, bij het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, strandde in Hilversum. Even later ging hij weer aan de slag, net zoals de ijscoman in Rotterdam, die hij op 23 mei 1940 te midden van de oorlogsruïnes fotografeerde. Onderweg door Nederland legde hij gewone en ongewone gebeurtenissen op straat op dia vast. Hustinx bleef zijn reizende voorstellingen volhouden tot eind 1943. Toen moest ook hij onderduiken om niet in Duitse handen te vallen. Op 18 januari 1945 lukte het hem om de Maas over te steken en zo door de Duitse linies in bevrijd gebied te komen. Wat restte waren 2000 kleurendia's uit de vijf oorlogsjaren.
