La enorme batalla naval que enfrentó el 7 de octubre de 1571 duran-te cuatro horas a las armadas de la Santa Liga y el Imperio otomano frente al puerto de Lepanto generó en los años siguientes una abun-dantísima iconografía que ha permitido visualizar durante siglos la grandeza y el horror de los combates navales en el Mediterráneo. Algunas de estas imágenes son testimonios verosímiles y docu-mentados del combate, pero la gran mayoría incorporan elementos alegóricos, mitológicos o celestiales procedentes de universos re-ferenciales de muy distinta índole. Unas y otras configuran en su conjunto uno de los más formidables artefactos simbólicos y cultu-rales de la Edad Moderna y, además, el primero con una proyección atlántica, como ponen de relieve docenas de sorprendentes repre-sentaciones americanas de la batalla. -- From back cover.
