La plupart des missionnaires voient dans ce culte sévère l'Œuvre du diable. L'un d'eux - Francis Aupiais - rompit radicalement avec cette vision. A l'opposé de ses confrères, sa conviction fut qu'un attachement si profond au culte vodoun - loin de signifier le règne de Satan - manifestait avec éclat une sorte de prédestination divine au christianisme.
