Die Geschlechterbücher repräsentierten prunkvoll und detailreich Rang und Status der Patrizierfamilien der frühen Neuzeit. Das Augsburger Geschlechterbuch enthält Graphiken, Drucke und kolorierte Zeichnungen. Die Bilder sind Vorarbeiten für ein später realisiertes Geschlechterbuch für das Augsburger Patriziat. Bekanntester Künstler ist Hans Burgkmair d. J. (um 1500 bis vor 1567), Sohn Hans Burgkmairs d. Ä. Berühmt ist das Augsburger Geschlechterbuch (um 1545) mit seinen Vorzeichnungen und Probedrucken für phantasievoll dargestellte Wappenhalter-Figuren von Hans Burgkmair d. Jüngeren und Heinrich Vogtherr d. Jüngeren. Es wurde im 2. Weltkrieg an seinem Auslagerungsort gestohlen und war lange Teit verschollen. Im Jahr 2004 wurde das Buch bei Sotheby's New York eingeliefert, konnte aber vor der Versteigerung bewahrt werden.
