Description

Bond slowly unfolds the story of a mother and a daughter on holiday in a cliff house in Eastern Europe. Xenia and Ann arrive after a difficult flight, Ann without the keys to the suitcase. They have booked the guest rooms, but Marthe who lives in the house now isn't pleased to see them again. Marthe is elderly and very ill. Her son David is pleased to see Ann. 'Summer' is a play about ordinary people, but nevertheless their lives are shadowed by history; with strength and clarity Bond's writing draws out the threads which tie them and everyone living to the terrible conflicts of the twentieth century. 'Summer' was first presented at the National Theatre in 1982.
