Johannes Peter Müller (1801-1858) est un des premiers fondateurs de la physiologie allemande. Sa pensée était radicalement scientifique et objective, expérimentale. Pourtant il publie "Les Manifestations visuelles fantastiques" (1826) alors qu'il a publié un peu avant la "Physiologie comparative du sens visuel de l'homme et des animaux". Les deux ouvrages diffèrent du tout au tout : l'ouvrage sur les manifestations fantastique explore "l'inverse" de la vision physiologique.
