Seit die archaische Grabfigur einer edlen jungen Frau 1925 für die Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin erworben wurde, zählt sie unter dem Namen 'Berliner Göttin' zu den 'Highlights' der Berliner Antikensammlung: In der Antike wäre sie im Sinne des griechischen Dichters Homer als "die Himmlische unter den Frauen" hervorgehoben worden. Die hohe Qualität des lebensgrossen Marmorwerks, seine frühe Entstehung zu Beginn der griechischen und damit auch der europäischen Grossplastik und die reich auf den Oberflächen erhaltenen Farben haben der 'Berliner Göttin' einen ersten Rang in allen Untersuchungen zur griechischen Skulptur gesichert. A study of the "Berlin Goddess," the archaic funerary statue of an aristocratic young woman in the collection of the Berlin State Museums. It is considered one of the highlights of the museum's ancient collection, and is an important piece for any study of Greek sculpture due to its high quality, early creation date, and the colors still in evidence on its surface. One of the authors, Wolfgang Massmann, is the leading conservator for the museum, and conducted a restoration on the "Berlin Goddess" in 2009-2010. This restoration allowed for new investigations of the origin of the marble, the colors of paint used on the statue, and the marks of work still visible on the statue's surface. The other author, Wolf-Dieter Heilmeyer, is the previous director of the Berlin State Museums' ancient collection. The collaboration between these two authors results in an account of the restoration and its scholarly implications, an analysis of the image of the statue and its origin, and an account of the modern reception of the statue.
