Abstract: This text describes the controversy concerning the marketing of breast milk substitutes in developing countries during the period 1973-1984. The infant food industry was accused of having caused a decline in breast-feeding through the inappropriate marketing of breast milk substitutes. According to the accusations, the result was malnutrition, gastroenteritis and increased infant mortality.
