Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) führte ein Leben auf europäischer Bühne. Architektur und Politik waren für ihn untrennbar verbunden. Sonja Hildebrand folgt seinem bewegten Lebensweg und entwirft zum ersten Mal ein umfassendes Bild seiner Persönlichkeit. Sie stellt seine großartigen Monumentalbauten in Dresden, Wien und Zürich vor und gibt einen tiefen Einblick in die Kulturgeschichte des 19. Jh. Semper war eine Ausnahmegestalt. 1803 als Hamburger Fabrikantensohn geboren, führten ihn Studienjahre nach Göttingen und Paris, Rom und Athen. Mit dem Ruf nach Dresden begann für den 31-jährigen die berufliche Karriere, die er später in Zürich und Wien glanzvoll fortsetzte. Als überzeugter Republikaner kämpfte er 1849 auf den Barrikaden. Der Preis waren Jahre im Exil. Heute bewundern wir vor allem die Semperoper, das Burgtheater in Wien oder das Schweriner Schloss.
