Der Norddeutsche liebte die Schweiz, war Mitglied im Schweizer Alpen-Club und reiste immer wieder dorthin in den Urlaub, auf der Durchreise oder um Freunde zu besuchen. Die imposante Alpenwelt hielt Nolde in Aquarellen fest: Sie veranschaulichen unbändige Schaffensfreude angesichts der Natur.
