Questo volume prende spunto dallo studio approfondito del Ritratto di Veronica Spinola Serra di Guilliam van Deynen della Galleria Nazionale della Liguria a Palazzo Spinola. Attraverso un'impegnativa ricerca condotta in numerosi archivi, ricostruisce non solo la storia legata alla vicenda biografica della protagonista, del marito Geronimo Serra e delle loro dimore, ma anche quella delle famiglie a loro strettamente legate per vincoli parentela o interessi. In particolare quella di Nicolò Pallavicino, banchiere del duca di Mantova Vincenzo I Gonzaga. Ricostruire così capillarmente il contesto ha consentito di restituire la fisionomia artistica di Van Deynen e la sua attività a Genova prima di diventare miniatore di corte presso Alberto e Isabella d'Asburgo a Bruxelles, ma anche consentito di argomentare nuove proposte per Rubens e la sua attività per i Genovesi.
