Description
Inmitten der Weinberge erhebt sich auf dem Gipfel des Stuttgarter Württembergs die Grabkapelle, die König Wilhelm I. für seine jung verstorbene Gemahlin Katharina, Tochter des Zaren Paul von Russland, erbauen ließ. Für das neue Bauwerk, errichtet als russisch-orthodoxe Kapelle, wurde eigens die mittelalterliche Stammburg des Hauses Württemberg abgetragen. Dadurch entstand auf der Bergkuppe ein weithin sichtbares Mausoleum. Die Grabkapelle ist ein herausragendes Beispiel klassizistischer Baukunst. Antike Bauten wie das Pantheon in Rom oder Renaissance-Bauwerke wie Andrea Palladios Villa Rotonda bei Vicenza dienten dem Architekten Giovanni Salucci als Vorbilder.
