Description

In this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Samuel J. May discusses the rough manner in which George Thompson was treated in New Hampshire, as well as a rumor circulating in Andover that Thompson had said ́slaves ought to cut their masterś throats.́ He gives some news from the area related to antislavery matters, and the necessity of public discourse about the measures to be taken for protecting the press and the mails, as well as liberty of speech. He goes on discussing a variety of topics such as the need for a more spirited minister in New York and the lectures he recently gave on the topic of antislavery.
