C'est sans doute à cause de leurs incessantes migrations que la plupart des populations gabonaises, sud camerounaises et nord congolaises conservaient leurs reliques ancestrales dans de petits paniers d'écorce ou d'osier tressé, d'un portage aisé, souvent surmontés d'une représentation anthropomorphe. Les groupes Kota plaçaient au sommet de ces ossuaires une effigie en bois plaquée de cuivre et de laiton.
