Gilles war Mitarbeiter (Oberregierungsrat) der Kriegswissenschaftlichen Abteilung der Luftwaffe. Sein ursprüngliches Manuskript entstand während des zweiten Weltkriegs als Forschungsarbeit und war bis 1943 noch nicht abgeschlossen. Durch die Kriegsereignisse wurde es nicht mehr gedruckt.
