Con descrizione lucida e coinvolgente De Amicis tratteggia i contorni della capitale inglese enfatizzandone la grandiosità monumentale nonchè la magnifica efficienza di strutture per allora avveniristiche come la metropolitana. Ricordi di Londra fu pubblicato per la prima volta dai fratelli Treves nel 1874, con in appendice il libro di Louis Simonin sui Quartieri poveri di Londra. Carabba ripubblica insieme i due testi in quanto il testo di Simonin fa da contraltare al resoconto ufficiale di De Amicis. Dai Quartieri poveri emerge una Londra che non si riconosce, ove tanto la descrizione quanto le immagini grafiche riflettono una realtà afflitta dalla piaga del pauperismo.
