When we set out to publish this book, and in particular to give it a name, we were advised that the language of equality originated in another time, another age, when naive social scientists and political theorists failed to appreciate the complexity of the post-modern world, a world in which the grand narratives of Marxism, feminism and other normative discourses were redundant.
