This photographic catalogue comprises the contrasting perceptions of two remarkable photographers of the rich architectonic patrimony of Mexico in the early 20th century: Guillermo Kahlo and Henry G. Peabody, featuring close to 120 period photographs (from the holdings of Fomento Cultural Grupo Salinas) of cathedrals, courtyards, villas, government buildings and much more. In 1897, Peabody visited Mexico with Sylvester Baxter for a firsthand study of Spanish-Colonial architecture in Mexico, particularly Zacatecas and Oaxaca. The outcome was the book "Spanish-Colonial Architecture in Mexico" published in 1901 showing the "folkloric and picturesque" side Mexico while highlighting the abandonment and ruins of its architectural patrimony. President Porfirio Díaz reacted to what is considered the first appreciation of the Mexican government towards its colonial and Pre-Hispanic patrimony by commissioning Guillermo Kahlo to graphically document the ancient and colonial built patrimony, although "to be captured in a more modern light, far away from the folklore." Kahlo's photographs were published in a book in 1924. The accompanying booklet is a descriptive catalogue of all the plates included in the book.
