Noordoost-Nederland staat niet bekend als een kasteelrijke regio. Toch stonden hier in de middeleeuwen ten minste 134 bisschoppelijke burchten, adellijke huizen en versterkingen. Dit gebied, dat bekend stond onder de naam Oversticht, maakte in de late middeleeuwen deel uit van het prinsbisdom Utrecht.
