Description
The title is no more than a statement of fact: i the Roman Catholic Church today clerical celibacy is under fire. But the subtitle is a statement of fact too, for the author's concern throughout is not to support either the would-be abolitionists or the last-ditche defenders, but rather to make an objective assessment of the evidence. As a result, his conclusions do not offer any simple 'yes' or 'no' answer to the celibacy question. He is emphatic that, at the level of dogmatic theology, there is abiding Christian significance in that celibacy which is 'for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven'. But he is equally emphatic that the human and pastoral problems which beset the present law of celibacy are very considerable. Changes are urgently required--but the Church has yet to evolve an authentic contemporary form in which to realize the permanent Christian value traditionally enshrined in clerical celibacy.
